Trip to Nancy kitchen (Melaka)

This restaurant was introduced by my wife's hair stylist, we had a hard time finding the place even with GPS. When we were around the area, we asked around but nobody seems to know this place. We almost wanted to give up...and then...an uncle came to our aid.

Beforehand, we did some online research and ordered some nice dishes recommended by bloggers.

A whole group of can't be bothered waiters...you have to ask for them at least 3 times before they attend to you, giving you a black face as they approach...i told myself, damn...the food better be good. All the food we ordered almost appear at the same time. Their meatball bamboo shoot soup is unique and very home cooked with ingredients which are superbly fresh.

This is one of the best dish we had in Nancy's Kitchen, petai with cuttlefish. The cuttlefish is cook to perfection together with sambal chilli and petai known as 'smelly beans' added another dimension into the dish.

Their Nyonya Popiah share the same fillings with Kuih Pai Tee and they are good. The skin might be hand-made and it is soft and chewy. It gives you the satisfaction with every bite, leaving you wondering why Singapore popiah makers don't make an effort to improve their so-called forte.

Their Kuih Pai Tee taste so good, the crunchiness of the skin, the home cooked fillings are meant for each other.

We all know Ayam buah keluak belongs to realm of Nyonya world. It seem like they are the ones who invented this dish. Making it unique to their culture. We loved Buah Keluak, we loved the digging...for that black substance that hid in the nut. Every mouthful of it make you feel like you are eating foie gras.

Otak-Otak, of course so sedap..with lots of coconut milk...sinful though. My wife think it is just so-so for this otak, taste like canned sardine...that bad?

This dish is known as Sayur Lodeh, a.k.a mixed vegetables in curry gravy. Hmm...not bad but definitely not something to rave about.

Sorry guys, this Nyonya Chendol is second to Penang's version. Penang version is thicker and more flavorful, its fillings is much home cooked. But you can taste it's powerful gula melaka (brown sugar unique to Melaka), lingering in your mouth...simply yummy.

Verdict:
Food: 5.8/10
Service: 2/10
Ambience: 5/10
Value: 5/10

Thoughts: Melaka really has a culture & tradition to itself. You can feel it when you eat, drink and roam there. If you love nyonya food, you have to be there! Nancy's kitchen may be popular to tourists and of course over priced. We spend RM$140 bucks on all the dishes mentioned above. I still love my wife's granny nyonya food.
